PROPERTY TAX AND ASSESSMENTS

The Town of Atikokan's tax department operates within the Financial Services Department and is responsible for the billing and collection of all interim, final and supplementary property tax billings.
 

Each year Council, along with Town management, prepares the budget and sets the municipal tax rates. These rates are determined by the amount of funding needed by the municipality to provide services to its citizens. There are two different components that are included in the combined tax rate; the municipal portion and the education portion. The Town is responsible for determining the municipal portion based on its level of required funding, and the Province determines the education portion. This combined rate when multiplied by a business or person's property assessment, determines the annual taxes payable.

2021 Tax Rates

The Town of Atikokan's property tax billing is split into two separate bills, interim billing and final billing.  Each bill requires that two equal payment that should be made on or before the following dates.
 

2021
1st Interim March 31
2nd Interim May 31
1st Final August 31
2nd Final October 29

All taxes shall be paid into the office of the collector (Town Hall) by either cash, cheque or debit. A pre-authorized payment plan for taxes may also be set up at the request of the individual. For RBC, TD Canada Trust and CIBC customers, on-line, telephone, in branch, and ATM payments are available.

PENALTY & INTEREST

There will be an imposed penalty for missed payments of taxes on due date or any installment thereof, the amount of 1.25% of the amount due on the first day of default, an additional penalty of 1.25% shall be added on the first day of each calendar month thereafter in which default continues, but not after the end of the year in which the taxes are levied. There shall be an imposed interest charge of 1.25% per month on any prior years' taxes which remain unpaid.

 

ASSESSMENTS

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is the Provincial agency that is responsible for providing all of the property assessments within a municipality. They provide a tax-roll which contains the location, description, assessment and property class for all the properties in the Town. If, for any reason, a taxpayer feels that their assessment is unfair or incorrect, they may file an appeal of assessment with the Assessment Review Board (ARB). All appeals must be filed with the board before the end of June or a request for reconsideration must be filed with MPAC before the end of December.

REBATES

The Tax Department also administers a number of provincially mandated programs including commercial/industrial vacancy rebates and registered charity rebates.

The department also processes property tax adjustments from Section 357/358 applications under the Municipal Act, Assessment Review Board Decisions and Request for Reconsiderations under the authority of the Assessment Act.
