Nomination Period
- During this period, eligible individuals may register to run for office in the 2026 Municipal Election.
Friday, May 1st, 2026 to Thursday, August 20th, 2026 between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.; and Friday, August 21, 2026 between the hours of 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Nomination Day
- Nomination Day is Friday, August 21st, 2026. This is the last day you can register to run for an office in the 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections.
Additional Candidate Nomination Deadline
- If there are fewer nominations than positions to be filled, additional nominations may be filed on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in accordance with subsection 33(5) of the Municipal Act, 1996.
Voting Period
- Advance voting is tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026 at 8:30 am until Monday, October 26, 2026 at 8:00 pm.
The last day you can vote in the 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections is Monday, October 26, 2026.
Voting closes Monday, October 26, 2026 at 8:00 pm.

Eligible candidates for municipal elections must be:
- A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old
- A resident of the municipality, a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality or the spouse of such non-resident owner or tenant
- Not legally prohibited from voting; and not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.
Candidates are also required to pay a nomination fee of $200 for the Office of the Mayor and $100 for Council Members and School Board Trustees. The filing fee is payable by cash, certified cheque, money order or debit card payment if specified by the Clerk. All payments and forms are to be submitted at Town Hall, 120 Marks Street, Atikokan, ON, P0T 1C0. Nomination Papers must be certified by the Clerk or Returning Officer before such person becomes a candidate for office. A Nomination Paper must be filed prior to accepting campaign contributions or incurring expenses.

You can visit Elections Ontario to update your information for provincial, municipal, district social services administration board and school board elections in Ontario. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility to vote to vote which will be reviewed by Elections Ontario. Learn more about confirming or updating your information for the 2026 municipal election through Elections Ontario’s Voter Registration service.
As of January 1, 2024, MPAC is no longer responsible for collecting voter information for local elections. To update your school support information, visit MPAC`s online School Support tool.
Be sure to confirm or update your School Support using MPAC’s School Support tool before June of 2026 to ensure your School Board Election ballot is for the school board of your choice in October of 2026.
Acceptable Documents For Voter Identification
Declaration of Identity – Form 9 – allows residents without identification to attest to their eligibility to vote or run for office. The form must be submitted to the Clerk or Returning Officer (120 Marks St, Atikokan, ON, P0T 1C0) before you are allowed to vote or have your candidacy accepted.

Internet and Telephone Voting are authorized under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, and by the Town of Atikokan, see By-Law No. 01-26. These methods offer efficiencies and cost savings compared to traditional voting methods. They allow eligible electors in the Town of Atikokan to vote remotely during the voting period, accommodating varied work schedules and temporary absences from the community. Internet and Telephone Voting also improve accessibility by providing a secure and private voting option for students, seniors, and electors with mobility, language, or disability-related barriers.
