Council Vacancy - Open Call for Appointment
TAKE NOTICE that a vacancy exists on the Town of Atikokan Council for (1) Councillor position.
At the December 19, 2024 Special Council meeting, Council passed a resolution to declare the seat vacant and directed Staff to proceed with an appointment through open call. The successful candidate’s term will extend from the date of Council appointment until the end of the term on November 14, 2026.

Eligible community members are invited to apply for the position of Councillor.
Council Appointment by Open Call
Applicants must be eligible to run for office in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996:
Applicants must:
- be a Canadian citizen aged 18 years old or older, and;
- live in Atikokan, or is the owner or tenant of land in Atikokan, or is the spouse of such owner or tenant, and;
- cannot be prohibited from voting under section 17 (3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise prohibited by law.
The process for the Council Appointment by Open Call will be as follows:

Interested applicants will need to complete an application package. This can be picked up at the Atikokan Municipal Office during operating hours or can be downloaded here:

Council Appointment Applications must be filed in person before January 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. Applications must include:

- A completed Declaration of Qualifications (except for your signature, which must be signed in front of a Clerk)
- A completed Consent to Release Personal Information (except for your signature, which must be signed in front of a Clerk)
- A personal statement of qualifications for Council’s consideration – this statement must be typewritten in a 12-point font on letter-size paper (8.5 x 11 inches), must include the Candidate’s name, and cannot exceed one page in length
An appointment with the Clerk’s Department is required to ensure the Clerk or Deputy Clerk is available to accept your nomination papers. Following the deadline to submit applications on January 17, the Clerk will publish a certified list of candidates.
Council Review & Candidate Presentations
Certified candidates will have the opportunity to address Council during a public meeting.
Each candidate will be allowed up to five (5) minutes to present their personal statement of qualifications.
To facilitate preparation, Council will share a list of pre-determined questions in advance. During the meeting, candidates will have two (2) minutes to respond to each question posed by Council.
